“A lot of photographers don’t ever get their picture taken and I think it’s very important as a photographer to get in front of the camera, even when you’re testing your light. If you can get in front of the camera and look down a lens, you’re going to have a lot more compassion for what you are doing. I think compassion for my subjects is something that I learned through shared experiences. Some have been bold enough to tell me that they don’t want to stand over there or do something particular. You should take the subjects’ criticism of your shot not personally but actually as a helpful tool to learn that you can’t ask the world from all your subjects. That’s a huge part of portraiture.”

I made a video about my friend Amy’s company, called Good West. They make bags and accessories. And by “they”, I mean “she’. In her apartment. With the help of Leo, her dog. Who I am tight with.

I shot and edited a video. This is my second video. I made it while camping with some friends over the weekend, and then edited over a half day in iMovie because Adobe Premiere is still scary to me, akin to looking at an airplane cockpit (this is also my relationship with Capture One still).

I’ve avoided shooting motion for years. I wanted to have even my first foray into the field be this perfect, highly polished thing. I was a bit afraid of being someone who had a decent grasp on how to make a good photo, but then faceplanted with a shit video. I was unsure if those visual skills would transfer. And so I never shot motion, for years.

Recently, I finally came to terms with the fact that I was making a huge impediment for myself, and decided to try making a series of short, imperfect little clips of daily life, friends, experiences. To just start “doing” instead of talking about why I shouldn’t start. So here’s one of those videos. A starting point. Paddling out past the break on a foam-top longboard and surfing around on baby waves, but still having fun. <3
